Course Description

This course is designed for students and professionals where knowledge of facial anatomy is paramount to their profession. This course will give students one of the most unique learning opportunities in anatomical education through the actual participation in dissection. Students will learn basic dissection techniques and will dissect cadaver specimens in order to gain an in-depth understanding of the topographical relationships of relevant anatomical structures of the face. Students will participate in a lecture at the beginning of the course where they will discuss structures to be dissected and identified, which will include discussion on the unique features of the skin of the face, the names and locations of the muscles of facial expression (especially those relevant to injections), and discuss the relevant neurovasculature as it applies to blood supply, sensation, motor control, and safety with injectables. Students will then be given a tutorial on dissection techniques and then be paired with another student where each will dissect one side of the face with assistance as needed from the instructors.

Limited Access

This live, hands-on course, has limited availability and will be closed for enrollment once the paid attendee threshold is met.

Course Objectives

Dissect and identify structures of the face: skin, muscles of facial expression, relevant neurovasculature while accomplishing the following:

  • Understand the unique features of the skin of the face.
  • Gain an understanding of the names, origins, insertions, and functions of the muscles of facial expression.
  • Understand the relationship between the muscles of facial expression and the skin.
  • Compare the similarities and differences of the muscles of facial expression and the typical skeletal muscle.
  • Discuss the facial and trigeminal nerves and the important differences in innervation of the facial anatomy.
  • Discuss the relevant arteries and veins of the face and their topographical importance to injections.

Course Requirements

The course is designed to provide a unique opportunity for individuals that use the knowledge of human facial anatomy as part of their profession, and although this course was designed with the medical aesthetics professional in mind, other professionals and students where facial anatomy is important to their profession are welcome to enroll in this course. Previous dissection experience is not a requirement for this course. Most anyone can learn how to dissect with proper guidance; however, dissection must be done with care and respect for the donated bodies, so students must dissect with the purpose of furthering their understanding of the human body.
